The man accused of raping two women last week had only been out of jail for a day before he attacked the first woman in her home, police say.

Derrick Caldwell, 30, has been charged with two counts of aggravated rape and two counts of aggravated burglary after two women — both over the age of 60 — were raped in their homes in Brainerd and Hixson on Dec. 10 and Dec. 11.

Both women described Caldwell as the attacker. The first woman told police she walked into her bedroom around 10 p.m. Dec. 10 and Caldwell "rose up" from the other side of her bed, threatened her and raped her.

In the second incident, the victim said Caldwell confronted her in her home around 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 11 and told her he had a knife before taking her to a bedroom and raping her.

Both women said Caldwell was still wearing his bright orange jail socks during the assaults. He had been released from jail on Dec. 9 after pleading guilty to a criminal trespassing charge.

Caldwell is now being held in the Hamilton County Jail on a $450,000 bond.
