Georgia Highway Patrol cadet crashes patrol car

A Georgia Highway Patrol cadet in training crashed his patrol car into the Fort Oglethorpe Auto Service Center on LaFayette Road early Sunday morning, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Robert Youell ran into the service center at 1823 LaFayette Road after chasing a man who drove through a DUI checkpoint around 12:50 a.m. Sunday, authorities said.

The suspect came to the checkpoint at South Crest Road and slowed down like he was going to stop, then sped off, nearly hitting a state trooper.

Youell was right behind him. But the suspect drove to Highway 27 south, then turned left onto Cloud Springs Road. The cadet lost control of the car and hit the service center when he attempted the turn.

The auto service center was not open at the time of the crash, and the cadet did not require medical attention.

The driver who evaded the DUI checkpoint escaped. Law enforcement officials expect to get a warrant for his arrest.

The case is still under investigation, according to Sgt. James McConathy, post commander for the Georgia State Patrol.
