Canceled flights down sharply at Atlanta airport

ATLANTA - Fewer than 40 Friday flights at Atlanta's airport had been canceled by early this morning, a dramatic decline after previous days when cancellations numbered in the hundreds.

The flight tracking service FlightAware reports that just 39 flights into and out of the world's busiest airport had been canceled before dawn today.

That's down from more than 800 cancellations the previous day.

At the height of this week's ice storm, more than two-thirds of all scheduled flights to and from Atlanta's airport on Wednesday were canceled.

Travel problems remained Friday at airports along the East Coast.

Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey - one of metro New York's three major airports - was leading the nation toay in the total number of flight cancellations for today with more than 280 flights canceled.
