East TN to see dry weather before rain, snow

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. - Rain and snow are in the picture for East Tennessee later today after a period of clear weather into the afternoon.

Meteorologists say areas in East Tennessee can expect a short period of dry weather before a system brings rain and snow, with accumulation up to 2 inches.

Meteorologist Derek Eisentrout said the region can expect clear weather into Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Morristown said snowfall on Wednesday and early Thursday blanketed parts of the region. Up to 16 inches of snow was reported in the Newfound Gap in Sevier, while Chattanooga received about 7 inches and Knoxville's airport got about 6 inches.

The snow led Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials to close two visitor centers and park headquarters Thursday.
