GA scales back response as conditions improve

ATLANTA - Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal says the state is scaling back its emergency operations as conditions improve following a winter storm that dumped snow and ice on the state.

Deal said people should still be cautious because there are patches of ice on roads. In one accident on Interstate 75, a vehicle skidded on ice and crashed into several parked cars whose drivers had stopped to help another person.

Georgia utility companies said a total of 989,400 customers lost power during the storm and its aftermath. About 175,000 customers were still without service this morning.

In the east Georgia town of Millen - an area hard-hit by power outages - authorities say a 5-year-old girl died early today after a candle sparked a fire in her home, which had lost power.
