Mountain surveillance delayed by cold

The recent winter conditions have not only delayed schools, but also new safety measures on Lookout Mountain.

The installation of six automobile surveillance cameras at entry points to Lookout Mountain has been delayed, said Lookout Mountain Town Consultant Dwight Montague.

"EPB has installed the power and connectivity to these pole locations, but the camera company hasn't been able to do their part," he said. "They might be able to get them up before the end of the month, but it could be early March."

The surveillance cameras are important to the community, as even a small break-in can be alarming to the isolated town, Montague said. When the town was hit with a recent rash of break-ins, community members asked for and funded the surveillance initiative. More than 230 members of the community donated a total of $88,000 to purchase the system. "I would say that most of the people here are in favor of it, just looking at that," Montague said.

In the case of a break-in, knowing a description of a suspect vehicle will be able to help police further investigate. The cameras will be able to take a picture of the license plate and overhead of each car that moves through the five entry points to Lookout Mountain. A sixth camera will be positioned at Lula Lake Road's and Scenic Highway's intersection.

"The police and the community are excited about another security measure for the community," Montague said.
