A 20-year-old Crossville, Ala., woman has been charged with aggravated child abuse, DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris said in a news release.

In early August 2013 the Alabama Department of Human Resources contacted the sheriff's office about a suspected child abuse case in Crossville, Harris said. The alleged victim was 8 months old at the time of the injury.

The victim's mom, Sabrina Sprayberry, called 911 and reported the child had fallen and he needed medical attention. She took the child by private vehicle to Marshall Medical Center. The child then was flown to Children's Hospital in Birmingham, where surgery was done.

An investigation found that the reported mechanism of injury did not match the nature of the injury, Harris said, and the case was presented to a grand jury.

Sprayberry was arrested, charged with aggravated child abuse and has been released on a $25,000 bond. The child is in the custody of the Department of Human Resources.
