MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Frigid temperatures are being reported in northern parts of Alabama, where forecasters say residents can expect sub-freezing temperatures and severe wind chills early this week.

The National Weather Service said temperatures plunged into the 20s before dawn today. It was 23 degrees in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, with 25-degree temperatures reported in Auburn and Anniston. In Montgomery, the mercury hit 29 degrees.

Wind chill and hard freeze warnings were in effect throughout much of Alabama as a severe winter weather system moves into the region. Officials expect the bitter cold weather to linger through at least Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected to be below freezing in many areas early this week and forecasters are expecting overnight lows to drop to potentially record-breaking single digit levels in some areas.
