EPB no longer asking customers to conserve power

EPB reports that TVA has cancelled its energy curtailment request, so the utility is no longer asking customers to help conserve power.

The Tennessee Valley Authority says its power system passed a critical demand period early today from the bitter cold wave and electricity use is on its way down.

"We appreciate all the efforts by our local power companies to reduce voltage," the utility said in a news release.

TVA's power system reached a preliminary peak power demand of 32,460 megawatts at 9 a.m. with the Valley's average temperature at 4 degrees.

It was the second highest winter peak in TVA history.

TVA's record winter demand is 32,572 megawatts set on Jan. 16, 2009, when temperatures averaged 9 degrees, and TVA's all-time record is 33,482 megawatts set on Aug. 16, 2007, when temperatures averaged 102 degrees.

TVA says it expects the cold weather to continue through Wednesday and electricity use to remain high.
