LaFayette man who accidentally shot girlfriend faces new charges

A LaFayette man arrested in November after accidentally shooting his girlfriend faces new charges in relation to that incident.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources have charged 23-year-old Matthew Tyler Webb with seven crimes, including hunting with illegal ammunition, hunting without a license and discharging a firearm under the influence. Webb returned to the Walker County Jail on Monday and remained there Tuesday afternoon in lieu of a $15,000 bond.

On Nov. 21, LaFayette Police Captain Stacey Meeks told the Times Free Press two months ago, Webb decided to hunt for deer in the woods across from his home on Hillsdale Road. From behind a thicket of briar, Webb heard some rustling and saw some movement.

Then, everything stopped. He thought it was an animal. He fired his rifle. He heard a scream. On the other side, with a bullet pierced through her right leg, lay Audrey Mayo, Webb's girlfriend.

The day of the incident, LaFayette police charged Webb with discharging a firearm within 150 feet of a road. But, because the case involved potential hunting violations, the DNR launched an investigation.
