Chattanooga Police Briefs: No one hurt in jewelry heist attempt

No one hurt in jewelry heist try

Bullet holes were still present at Kennedy Jewelry, 2012 S. Main St., on Tuesday, after gunfire ripped through the store’s windows Monday evening when two armed men entered the store and demanded store employees turn over merchandise, according to a Chattanooga police report.

The report states that the men, both with covered faces, entered Kennedy Jewelry during business hours with an assault rifle and a laundry hamper.

One of the men said, “Get it all” or “All of it,” according to police. Then the armed man fired a shot, which struck the rear of the store.

According to police, Shane Kennedy, an employee, grabbed a handgun and fired several return shots at the robbers, who fled without taking anything. The armed robber fired several more shots, according to police. No one was injured.

Police picked up Diontre Danforth, 18, at a residence on Beech Street on Monday evening after the incident. Several items of clothing that store employees described as belonging to one of the suspects were found between the Beech Street residence and Kennedy Jewelry, the police report states.

An assault rifle was found on Kelly Street, police say. A resident on the street told police he saw a man in a silver sedan toss the gun along the street and drive away.

During an interview with police, Danforth denied being part of the robbery.

Danforth is being held at Hamilton County jail on charges of aggravated robbery and criminal conspiracy to commit robbery. No information about the second suspect was available Tuesday.
