Snow, ice forecast for middle, south GA this week

ATLANTA - A blast of winter precipitation could cover parts of middle Georgia with 3 inches of snow this week, while dangerous ice accumulation is possible in areas near the coast.

The National Weather Service has placed much of Georgia under a winter storm watch from Tuesday morning through Wednesday afternoon. The forecast is unusual for Georgia in that most of the worst weather is expected south of Atlanta.

The Weather Service says 1 to 3 inches of snow accumulation is possible in cities including Americus, Columbus, Macon, Milledgeville and Athens. Snow and sleet could begin Tuesday morning, with the worst snowfall expected overnight Tuesday.

Forecasters say up to an inch of snow and ice accumulations of up to ½ inch are possible in Savannah and surrounding parts of southeast Georgia.
