Auburn golf official, former pro killed in crash

AUBURN, Ala. - An Alabama coroner says the director of operations for Auburn University's golf program has died in a car wreck.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said 33-year-old Danielle Downey died after the one-car crash on Lee County Road 57 around 10 p.m. Thursday.

Harris said Downey was heading north on the county road when she lost control of her vehicle. It left the road and overturned several times.

Harris said Downey was a former Auburn University and Ladies Professional Golf Association golfer.

Alabama State Troopers and the coroner's office are investigating the accident.

A statement from the coroner said the reason she lost control of the car hasn't been identified. Though highways have been icy in many parts of Alabama, the statement did not indicate whether bad weather was a factor.
