Car plunges into suburban Atlanta pond; divers search for person

A woman's body is recovered by police, Wednesday, July 30, 2014 in a car that plunged into a pond in a Gwinnett County office park. Gwinnett County fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said when firefighters arrived, witnesses "were able to quickly pinpoint to us where the vehicle would be in the water." Rutledge said the vehicle was completely submerged when fire crews arrived. "Firefighters did don their personal flotation devices and attempt to make access to the vehicle," he said. "Their rescue attempts were unsuccessful." A dive team from Hall County also responded to the scene, Rutledge said.

PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga. - Authorities say divers are trying to locate an occupant who might be inside a vehicle after it plunged into a pond in suburban Atlanta.

Gwinnett County fire officials say they were called to the pond in Peachtree Corners during the morning rush period, around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Fire officials say witnesses reported that a person was inside the vehicle when it went into the water.

Authorities said the car remained completely submerged under water shortly before 8:30 a.m.

Gwinnet County fire officials say a dive team from Hall County has been called to the scene, which is about 20 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.

Few other details were immediately available.
