Crash on I-24 in Coffee County injures 11 - and more Chattanooga region news

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. - Authorities say four adults and seven children were injured when their van blew a tire on Interstate 24 in Coffee County.

According to WKRN-TV, the crash occurred about 5 p.m. Saturday near Tullahoma. The van turned onto its side before landing back on all four wheels along the highway.

The driver, Zhameca Hall, 41, was listed in stable condition at United Regional Medical Center in Manchester. Two other adults and two children, ages 6 and 4, were listed in stable condition there.

A 12-year-old was taken to Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga, where the child was listed in stable condition.

Three other juveniles -- ages 1, 8 and 14 -- were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, where they were in stable condition. The conditions of another adult and a 13-year-old child taken to Vanderbilt were not released.


Man accused of floating drunk

ROME, Ga. - Rome police arrested a man they said was floating on a raft down a river while drunk.

The wife of Joshua Michael Campbell, 26, called 911 about 6 p.m. Sunday when she got separated from him on the Etowah River. She told officers that Campbell was drunk.

According to an incident report, officers found Campbell floating on a raft down the river, and members of the Rome Fire Department pulled him out. Campbell said he drank a couple of beers and a couple of shots of liquor earlier in the day.

Police charged Campbell with operating a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol.


Fugitive caught at hospital

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A man accused of sexually assaulting a woman and her 8-year-old daughter in Alabama has been captured while being treated at a hospital in West Palm Beach.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's officials said they received an anonymous tip that a fugitive was being treated at Bethesda Hospital East on Monday evening. Deputies found David Pitts, 44, who was arrested without incident.

Pitts is accused of abducting a 30-year-old woman and her daughter from their Ozark, Ala., home on July 24. He is being held for Alabama authorities at the Palm Beach County Jail.


Class on losing accent canceled

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has canceled a class to teach employees how to reduce their Southern accents.

Some employees had complained about the course that was advertised as a way to "feel confident in a meeting when you need to speak with a more neutral American accent, and be remembered for what you say and not how you say it."
