Alabama voters in Jackson and DeKalb counties picked their favorite primary candidates on Tuesday from the race for the governor's office to a tally in the town of Hollywood on whether to allow alcohol sales.

Elections officials in both counties said voter turnout Tuesday was low and some contests ended in counts close enough to require a runoff election on July 15.

DeKalb County had 6,349 total ballots cast out of 36,144 registered voters, said Jo Stiefel with the Board of Registrars Office in Fort Payne.

"It was very low," Stiefel said.

Likewise, Jackson County had 6,840 total ballots cast among about 37,000 registered voters, according to Circuit Court Clerk Ken Ferrell, one of the officials who oversees county elections. Media reports in Alabama also state that Jackson County voters in the town of Hollywood approved alcohol sales, 98 to 55.

REVENUE COMMISSIONER

In the local race for DeKalb County revenue commissioner, voting counts available Wednesday morning show Tyler Wilks defeated his opponent in the Republican primary, Royce L. Lader, 3,487 to 1,360. In Jackson County's GOP primary for revenue commissioner, Kathy Thompson had 1,451 votes to Shadrack McGill's 1,225 with Kermit Cornelison coming in third with 984 votes. That tally will require Thompson and Shadrack to face each other in a runoff on July 15.

Jackson County voters also balloted in a local Democratic primary for county school board District 3 seat between Chad Anthony Gorham and Dana Moore with Gorham outstripping Moore by more than 300 votes, county election records show.
