Roughly 200 people attended an hour-long public memorial service today for a Walker County Sheriff's Office K9 shot to death June 13 as deputies were trying to serve felony warrants in Menlo, Ga.
K9 officers from across Georgia lined up in front of the Walker County Civic Center as Tanja's ashes were removed from a hearse while a lone bagpiper played.
"Many people will criticize us, and say it was just a K9," Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson said afterward. "She was more than that."
Wilson said the service cost the department very little because of donations.
