Cherie Swader to officially become Dade County Schools Superintendent

Interim Dade County Schools Superintendent Cherie Swader will take over district responsibilities on a full-time basis, after a board of education vote.

The vote came as no surprise after the board previously identified Swader as its only remaining finalist for the job, the Dade County Sentinel reported.

Before assuming the schools chief job on an interim basis, Swader was serving as associate superintendent. She also was previously a principal in the Dade County system.

Former Superintendent Shawn Tobin had planned to retire in May. But at a special called meeting in February, the school board voted 4-1 to buy out Tobin's contract, making his retirement immediate.

At the time, Board Chairwoman Carolyn Bradford said the buyout was by mutual agreement.
