MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Officials in Tennessee are warning motorists to stay off icy roads, and the governor has declared a state of emergency due to the deteriorating conditions.

Tennessee state offices were closed today because of hazardous weather conditions throughout the state. Cities in Middle Tennessee have issued warnings to drivers about treacherous road conditions and Shelby County, which includes Memphis, issued its own state of emergency. Officials said several vehicles had already slid off highways due to the winter storm that swept through Tennessee on Sunday and early today.

A steady freezing rain fell for hours Sunday night in Shelby County, and other parts of the state.

Officials say persistent temperatures below freezing are possible.

School districts in Nashville, Memphis and much of West and Middle Tennessee have called off classes.
