Local radio legend Luther Masingill, who will turn 92 on Sunday, will appear on satellite radio Sirius XM's 60s on 6 channel with host and longtime Luther fan Phlash Phelps. The segment will air between noon and 12:30 p.m. Friday.

"I'm excited to speak to the world's longest-running broadcaster in his 74th year on the radio, and to wish him a happy birthday," Phelps said. "He was on WDEF radio when Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, served in World War II, and he's still on the same station today.

"I'm sure I'll ask him how he stays in shape, and why he keeps going. He is an inspiration to all of us. I've been on satellite radio for 14 years, and that seems like a long time, until you compare it to Luther," Phelps said.

Masingill was inducted into both the Tennessee and national Radio Halls of Fame in recent years and still plays a big part in the WDEF-FM 92.3 morning show and the WDEF-TV newscast at noon. Next month, he will celebrate his 60th anniversary on WDEF-TV, where he has appeared daily since the station signed on in April 1954.

"I appreciate Phlash and the 60s on 6 channel for letting me talk to the nation," Luther said. "Sirius XM is based in Washington, so who knows, the president might be listening. I'm going to find a good Frank Sinatra song to play for them while I'm on the satellite."
