NASHVILLE - A proposal to delay further implementation of Tennessee's Common Core standards has been approved in the House.
The measure sponsored by Republican Rep. Timothy Hill of Blountville was approved 82-11 on Thursday.
The legislation would delay implementation of the standards for two years.
The standards are intended to provide students with the critical thinking, problem solving and writing skills needed for college and the workforce.
They have been voluntarily adopted by 45 states. Tennessee adopted them in 2010 and began a three-year phase-in the following year.
Hill's bill initially sought to require courses on the United States government be taught in public schools, but was amended to address Common Core.
