Tennessee House approves apology for 1830 Indian Removal Act

NASHVILLE - One-hundred-and-eighty-four years after the fact, the Tennessee House today approved a resolution expressing regret for the 1830 Indian Removal Act.

The federal law resulted in the forced removal of Native Americans from Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and other parts of the Southeastern U.S. in what became known as the Trail of Tears.

Sponsored by House Republican Caucus Chairman Glen Casada of Franklink, the resolution was approved on a 90-0 vote.

The 19th Century law resulted in the forced removal of some 15,000 Native Americans from Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and other parts of the Southeast.
