Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke today unveiled a new incentive for expanding small businesses which he said can bolster job growth in the city.

Berke said if companies add five or more employees, the business will receive a $500 per worker credit.

"It's a way to incent small business growth," the mayor said as he rolled out the Grow Small Businesses credit initiative at the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce.

Berke said companies must be 100 employees or less to quality and the program is to start July 1.

He said plans are to provide a yet-unspecified amount of money into the city budget for the effort. Qualified workers must work for a year before the company receives the cash incentive, Berke said.
