U.S. Sen. Bob Corker said today that efforts to attract a new vehicle for production at Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant are "moving in a very positive way."

"They really need to build an sport utility vehicle here," he said at a downtown Chattanooga event in which online giant Google was helping about 100 small businesses get their companies on the web.

Corker said VW needs to make a decision "very, very soon" on the SUV, or it will fall behind in the market.

"I still feel very positive and feel like Chattanooga is the best place for VW, and hopefully that's what we'll see happen," the former mayor said.

VW has termed Chattanooga as the front-runner to produce a new SUV at the Chattanooga factory, a move that could create hundreds of millions of dollars of new investment and upwards of 1,000 jobs.
