ATLANTA - State Department of Natural Resources officials say Georgia waters will be closed to recreational oyster harvesting beginning next month.
Officials said in a statement that the closure between June 1 and Sept. 30 is aimed at controlling a naturally occurring virus known as Vp. State wildlife officials say the virus is typically found in filter-feeding shellfish and is found in higher concentrations when coastal water is warm.
Officials say consumption of raw oysters that carry Vp can cause vomiting, abdominal cramping, fever, chills and diarrhea. Authorities say cooking oysters and other shellfish generally destroys all bacteria, including Vp.
Officials say clam harvesting in approved areas is still permitted during summer months because clams are usually cooked at high heat before being eaten.
