Polls close after Georgia primary election

May 20th, 2014 by Staff Report in Local - Breaking News

Polls are now closed across Georgia after the earliest primary election in the state's history.

In Catoosa County, director of elections Tonya Moore said voter activity had been "slow.

"At 6 p.m. we'd had 2,494 for election day," she said.

Catoosa had recorded 939 early votes, Moore said.

Early voters statewide had cast a total of 239,281 ballots as of Friday, according to Secretary of State Brian Kemp. That number is up over 2010, when 212,487 people voted early.

"The numbers make it clear that Georgia voters are increasingly taking advantage of early voting opportunities," Kemp said in a news release. "The counties have done a wonderful job of fine-tuning the early voting process."

Early voting in 2010 was spread over a seven-week period rather than the three-week period in place now.
