Gray Construction is expected to be recommended to undertake a $33.6 million project related to the $900 million Volkswagen plant expansion in Chattanooga.

The Chattanooga Industrial Development Board, which is overseeing contracts related to the VW project for the city and Hamilton County, is slated to consider the proposed work on Friday.

The Lexington, Ky., firm would perform work related to expansion of the body shop, technical center and assembly finish areas, according to the board's agenda. A $2.2 million contingency also is included in Gray's proposed contract.

During the initial construction of the VW plant, Gray handled nine separate projects over a two-year period.

VW is expanding the plant so a new sport utility vehicle can be assembled at the factory. Production on the SUV is expected in 2016.
