Chattanooga woman with DUI history charged with vehicular homicide in 2014 crash

A 34-year-old Chattanooga woman has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide after a deadly single-vehicle car crash on Interstate 24 in February 2014.

Debra Carney is accused of being intoxicated and driving on a revoked or suspended license when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a guardrail and a tree near Cummings Highway on Feb. 3, 2014.

Her passenger, James Ledford, 69, died at a hospital from injuries he sustained in the crash.

Carney also is charged with reckless endangerment, reckless aggravated assault, driving on a revoked license, financial responsibility, failure to maintain lane and driving under the influence.

Carney already has three DUI convictions. She pleaded guilty in 2000 and 2004 in Hamilton County, and was convicted in Catoosa County, Ga., in 2001.

Carney also pleaded guilty to selling alcohol to minors and drinking underage in 2000, when she was 20.

She was booked into the Hamilton County Jail on Tuesday and is being held on a $100,000 bond.
