Six Civil War-era Medal of Honor recipients will be honored Saturday as the local Medal of Honor Heritage Trail continues to shape up.

The trail, a project of The National Medal of Honor Museum of Military History, will eventually honor all 33 Medal of Honor recipients from the battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga. The museum, located at Northgate Mall, works to recognize the service of the nearly 3,500 individuals who have received the country's highest military honor since it was established in 1861.

On Saturday, officials will dedicate two markers at Lee and Gordon's Mills in Chickamauga that tell the stories of six Civil War soldiers involved with the 1863 Battle of Chickamauga. Those to be honored include: 2nd Lt. Orville T. Chamberlain, 74th Indiana Infantry; Pvt. George S. Myers, 101st Ohio Regiment; Cpl. William E. Richey, 15th Ohio Regiment; Cap. Horace Porter, Army of the Cumberland; 1st Lt. Anthony Taylor, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment; and Sgt. William G. Whitney, 11th Michigan Infantry Regiment.
