A family pet perished after an explosion and fire ripped through a home on Sam Smith Road on Friday, authorities said.
Firefighters from the Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department responded when a neighbor called 911 at 2:30 p.m., said Amy Maxwell with Hamilton County Emergency Management.
They found heavy smoke coming from the crawl space and flames on the side of the home, but got the blaze out in a few minutes, Maxwell said.
No one was home, but the firefighters found a dog under the bed that did not survive.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and will be investigated by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.
