The 21-year-old driver who struck a pedestrian downtown early this morning is believed to have been drinking before taking the wheel.

"We have reason to believe the suspect had been served [alcohol]" said Kyle Miller, spokesman for the Chattanooga Police Department.

The person was struck by the car around 2 a.m., at 400 Cherry Street, near the headquarters of Unum. Police estimate that the person was dragged up to four blocks.

The victim was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, and is expected to survive, according to police.

The driver has not been arrested, and once the investigation is complete, police say evidence will be presented to a grand jury to determine the level of charges against the driver.
