NASHVILLE -- A bill allowing undocumented students to attend Tennessee public colleges paying in-state tuition rates today cleared a House committee that is often a killing ground for legislation.

House Finance Subcommittee members approved the bill on a voice vote. It now proceeds to the full Finance Committee.

Senators have already passed that chamber's version of the bill, sponsored by Sen. Todd Gardenhire, R-Chattanooga.

The bill would apply to students brought to the U.S. as children who have since been deemed "lawfully" president in the country under a 2012 federal program.

Students have to have graduated from a Tennessee high school or a GED program.
