The National Weather Service predicts heavy rain and thunderstorms on the way to the Chattanooga area, starting tonight with a 90 percent chance of precipitation.

Saturday, expect showers and possibly a thunderstorm before breakfast, then more showers and thunderstorms for the rest of the morning, the agency reports. Some of those storms could produce heavy rainfall.

Saturday night the deluge continues, with showers and thunderstorms thrashing Chattanooga until 2 a.m. before slacking off, producing heavy rainfall with gusts up to 20 miles per hour.

The front is slated to clear up on Sunday, when there's just a 20 percent chance of showers before 2 p.m. as temperatures move up toward 75 and the sky clears to partly sunny.

Farther south, the NWS Storm Prediction Center is forecasting severe thunderstorms this evening from the central Plains to the Gulf Coast, in an area comprising eastern Kansas, central Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, southern Arkansas and Northern Louisiana.

Those supercell thunderstorms are capable of large hail, damaging winds and tornados, according to the NWS.
