Area officials, groups react to Supreme Court same-sex marriage decision

Two men who wed in Iowa have won the right to divorce in Tennessee.

The Tennessee Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that Frederick Michael Borman and Larry Kevin Pyles-Borman were entitled to divorce under the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage.

The Court of Appeals said the opinion on Obergefell v. Hodges holds that "a State may not refuse to recognize a lawful same-sex marriage performed in another state."

The appeals court ruling overturned a trial judge's decision against the couple's right to divorce. Their appeal was pending when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports this is believed to be the first same-sex divorce in Tennessee.
