Second man dies Tuesday after Athens triple shooting

A second man died early Tuesday after Saturday's triple shooting in Athens, Tenn., which claimed the life of another man and left a third person recovering from his wounds.

Athens authorities said 37-year-old Matthew A. Moore died early Tuesday after undergoing surgeries related to organ donation and being taken off life support.

The shooting, which occurred at 4:16 p.m. Saturday at 101 Lime St., appears to have involved only the three men, Athens Police Department Detective Sgt. Fred Schultz said Tuesday.

There is no at-large shooter, the detective said.

Also killed was Rendell Correy Jones, 40, of Athens, Schultz said. A third man, Timothy C. White, 47, of Athens, is recovering from his injuries after being treated at Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga.

Schultz said two others present during the shooting were uninjured.

"As of right now, we have bits and pieces of what sparked it, but we don't have a clear motive," Schultz said. "We're waiting for autopsy results on Moore."

The detective said the autopsy probably will be performed today. The probe is ongoing.

The investigation began Saturday afternoon after Athens police responded to Starr Regional Medical Center to investigate a report that Jones and White had arrived at the emergency room with gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Other officers who had learned where the shooting happened headed for the Lime Street home and found Moore lying in the floor blocking the front door, Schultz said. Moore, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was flown to University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville for treatment.

Investigators are still sorting out who fired at whom and how many weapons were involved, Schultz said.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation.
