Elderly newlyweds dead in apparent murder-suicide

DECATUR, Ala. -- Two elderly newlyweds are dead following what authorities say appears to be a murder-suicide in north Alabama.

Morgan County Sheriff Ana Franklin says 76-year-old Robert Wendell Luker and 73-year-old Pearl Haga were found dead in their home in the Valhermoso Springs community.

The two were married on Aug. 17 and had been together about 12 years in all.

The sheriff tells the Decatur Daily a neighbor found the couple dead after checking on them Sunday night. Franklin says it appears Luker killed the woman and then shot himself.

Franklin says Haga was very ill and had been in the hospital until recently.

The sheriff says there's no indication of a motive over than health issues.
