Autopsy: Drugs to blame in death of suspect

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Authorities say an autopsy shows drugs were to blame for the death of a man who died in police custody in Tuscaloosa.

Tuscaloosa County District Attorney Lyn Head says an examination showed 35-year-old Anthony Ware had used methamphetamine, cocaine and alcohol before his death last month.

Ware's death was blamed on drug toxicity. The report says Ware had conditions including an enlarged heart that could have worsened the effects of the drugs.

Police used pepper spray to subdue Ware after he ran away from officers on July 10. They were trying to arrest him on an outstanding warrant at the time.

A medical examiner concluded Ware had several superficial injuries that were caused by him running through bushes and rough terrain.
