Judge Walter Williams placed on disability inactive status

Judge Walter Williams, former Chattanooga City Court judge, was placed on disability inactive status, Chattanooga-based law firm McKoon, Williams & Hegeman announced Thursday.

He was placed on disability inactive status by the Tennessee Supreme Court. Williams, 63, suffered a stroke on Christmas last year and has been undergoing therapy since then. He also is recovering from a torn rotator cuff, the release said.

"While he is doing well," the release said, "the use of his predominant hand for writing and his speech remain in recovery."

If Williams recovers enough to be able to practice law, he will request reinstatement by the Tennessee Supreme Court, the release said.

Williams' files will continue to be handled by McKoon, Williams & Hegeman and Williams requests that his clients continue to he handled by the firm, the release said.

The Chattanooga-born judge was admitted to the bar in 1978 and attended Morehouse College in Atlanta and Howard University School of Law in Washington D.C. He was elected for two eight-year terms as City Court judge before retiring in 2003.
