David L. McKinney Jr., 49, was killed in a motorcycle crash on State Highway 30 in Rhea County at 9:45 Friday night, according to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

McKinney was traveling east on Highway 30 coming down Dayton Mountain when he crossed double yellow lines trying to pass a tractor trailer and a pickup truck. He then came back into his lane and went off the road into some grass, the report said.

He lost control of his motorcycle and went into a ditch. The motorcycle slid into a driveway embankment, went air born, and landed in a thicket of a tree line to the right of the road, the release said.

When McKinney was eventually found, he was pronounced dead on the scene. The report said alcohol was involved and additional alcohol and drug tests have been ordered.
