The navigation lock at the Chickamauga Dam is closed as the Tennessee Valley Authority manages water levels in the face of heavy rain that has blanketed the area since Sunday.

Navigation lock closures are fairly rare, occurring roughly once or twice a year, TVA spokesman Travis Brickey said Wednesday morning.

When a navigation lock is closed, it prevents commercial boats from passing through.

Brickey added that some parts of the Tennessee Valley have received as much rain in the past four days as they usually get in two months.

This is a developing story. See tomorrow's Times Free Press for more details.
