A new report by RoadSnacks, a website that examines regional trends, ranks Chattanooga as Tennessee's seventh most dangerous city.
The report scored 89 cities in the state in two categories, ranking the Scenic City 13th in violent crime and 10th in property crime. RoadSnacks defines violent crime as rapes, murders, robberies and aggravated assaults and property crimes as theft or arson.
An earlier report by ValuePenguin, which examined similar data, listed the Scenic City as the state's fifth most dangerous. However, RoadSnacks analyzed the FBI data with an emphasis on figures from 2013, the most recent available.
According to RoadSnacks' analysis, the most dangerous cities in Tennessee are:
1. Crossville
2. Dyersburg
3. Athens
4. Memphis
5. Newport
6. Covington
7. Chattanooga
8. Pigeon Forge
9. Knoxville
10. LaFollette
The numbers show that in 2013, Chattanoogans had a 1 in 100 chance of being attacked or killed and a 1 in 15 chance of being robbed or burnt, noting an alarming growth in recent crime rates.
Crossville dethroned Memphis as the Volunteer State's most dangerous city, with 1 in 9 of its citizens experiencing property crime and 1 in 79 as victims of violent crimes.
Memphis now ranks as Tennessee's fourth most dangerous city, first in violent crime but thirteenth in property crime. According to RoadSnacks, 1 in 60 Memphis residents are victims to violent crime while the property crime rate has dropped 6% from 2011-2013.
Ninth on the list is Knoxville, listed 14th in violent crime and 11th in property crime. Although residents have a 1 in 119 chance of being the victim of a violent crime and a 1 in 16 chance for property crime, those numbers have significantly dropped for our northern neighbors since 2011.
Nashville ranks 29th on this list, though ValuePenguin placed it as 83rd last July.
On the brighter side, Tennessee is no longer the nation's most dangerous state, ranking third behind Alaska and Nevada, according to WorldAtlas.
