Day two of testimony at Chance Loftis' trial revolved around the area of the Tennessee River where Donald "Pee Wee" Rogers' body was found slumped over a boat, head submerged in the water.

On Thursday afternoon, Chief Markus Fritts with Dallas Bay Fire and Rescue and Sgt. Mark Williams with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office testified about the crime scene near the Grasshopper Creek Recreation Area where Rogers' body was found in April 2012.

During opening statements on Wednesday, Assistant District Attorney Jason Demastus argued that Loftis beat Rogers and left him and his dog to die.

Both Loftis and Travis Jenkins, 31, are charged with second-degree murder and aggravated cruelty to animals in the deaths of Rogers and his yorkie terrier, Braxton.

Jenkins will be tried separately.

On Thursday, Loftis, 27, sat with his defense attorney Mary Sullivan Moore, paying close attention and taking notes on a yellow legal pad throughout the testimony.

The jury listened as Fritts described arriving at the crime scene and finding Rogers' body.

"The boat was kinda just sitting steady, so we decided to tie it up so it wouldn't float away," he said.

Next, Fritts said he put his arm in the water and checked the victim for a pulse, and could not find one.

During Williams' testimony, pictures of the dead dog floating in the river were shown, and the island where Rogers' body was found could be seen in the background.

Williams said he retrieved the dog's body from the shoreline, directly across from where the body was found.

"I waded into the water and picked the dog up," he said. "It became a part of the investigation."

The trial will continue today and is expected to continue into next week.
