Alcohol called primary factor in sex assaults

Experts took aim at drinking's role in sexual assault during a statewide summit in Nashville, with some calling alcohol the "primary facilitator" -- able to turn fruity drinks and tequila shots into weapons.

Alcohol played a significant role in the rape case involving two former Vanderbilt University football players, a case that loomed large over the gathering of college staffers for the Tennessee Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Summit at Tennessee State University. Jurors handed down guilty verdicts for both men on Tuesday, the first day of the summit.

Lawyers for one of the defendants, Cory Batey, had contended he was too drunk to be held responsible for his actions during the June 2013 rape in a Vanderbilt dorm.
