Police and firefighters shut down Amnicola Highway on Tuesday morning after a pickup truck and a semi-truck collided around 10 a.m. at the intersection of Amnicola and Creekside Road.

The driver of the pickup truck was trapped in his vehicle, which was wedged under the semi-truck when firefighters arrived, Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said.

A fire broke out in the engine compartment while firefighters cut the man out of the truck, but it was quickly extinguished, Garner said. The driver was freed after 30 minutes and taken to Erlanger hospital.

The man's injuries were not life-threatening, according to Chattanooga police.

Amnicola Highway was closed while firefighters worked but reopened around noon, Garner said.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation.

It was the second serious wreck involving a semi-truck in Chattanooga in the last six days. On Thursday, a tractor-trailer plowed into several vehicles on Interstate 75 and killed six people.

That crash is also under investigation.
