After hearing news that Commissioner Jason Winters ordered the Sons of Confederate Veterans to remove their flag from the courthouse lawn, about 100 Chattooga County residents marched downtown in protest.

They waived their own confederate flags. Some yelled, "We want our flag back!" Others yelled, "Heritage, not hate!"

Winters did not return a call seeking comment. Stan Hammond commander of the local Sons chapter, said he did not know about the protest until someone told him about it after the fact.

"That's not us," he said. "We didn't have anything to do with it."
