Police say a man with a machete caused a lot of trouble on Independence Day.
The man allegedly assaulted a couple in East Ridge this morning and chased them out of a house before barricading himself during a SWAT standoff.
Police say it happened in the 3700 block of Whitehead Avenue around 2:30 a.m.
At the scene, the female victim told police that her brother, 36-year-old Tommy Durham, assaulted her and her boyfriend. Durham then reportedly retreated back inside the house with the machete and refused to talk to police.
The East Ridge SWAT Team arrived around 3:15 a.m. An officer eventually called Durham on the phone and convinced him to surrender peacefully.
Just before 5 a.m., Durham exited the residence unarmed and was taken into custody without incident.
The two victims were taken to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Durham will be charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated domestic assault, according to a news release. He is scheduled to appear in court July 21. Bond has not yet been set.
