Police: Machete attack leads to SWAT standoff in East Ridge

A standoff lasting about two hours Saturday morning ended peacefully when an East Ridge man agreed to turn himself in.

According to an East Ridge Police release, 36-year-old Tommy Durham attacked his sister and her boyfriend around 2:30 a.m. and chased them out of the house with a machete. He then barricaded himself inside.

After Durham's sister called 911, according to the release, the East Ridge SWAT team showed up around 3:15 a.m. Members of the team could see Durham through a window. He was still holding his machete.

Finally, around 5 a.m., an East Ridge officer talked to Durham on the phone, and he agreed to turn himself in. Police charged him with aggravated assault and aggravated domestic assault. His sister and her boyfriend went to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Durham is scheduled to appear in court on July 21.
