Fees charged by the state Department of Health's Office of Vital Records for birth and death certificates went up July 1.
The cost for the first copy of a death certificate more than doubled, from $7 to $15. The first copy of a short-form birth certificate increased from $8 to $15. Duplicate copies for each form went from $5 each to $15.
Health Department spokeswoman Shelley Walker said the increases are needed to support the operations of the Tennessee Office of Vital Records. But she said costs remain lower than those in surrounding states.
The state could see an increase of about $900,000 in collections. Local health departments collectively could see nearly $2.7 million more in revenues.
