The Chattanooga Times Free Press received 29 awards, including the top honor in its category, in the 2015 Tennessee Press Association journalism awards.

The newspaper on Thursday was awarded the General Excellence award in the large newspaper division at TPA's annual meeting in Knoxville.

The Times Free Press received the following awards:

* First-place awards for sports coverage, news reporting and Sunday editions;

* Second-place awards in the categories of community lifestyles, local features, best single feature, education reporting, business coverage, sports photo, make up and appearance, personal column, editorials, best special issue, headline writing, best single editorial and investigative reporting.

* Third-place awards for sports photo, sports writing, best personal column, best personal humor column, public service and best breaking news coverage.

* Fourth-place awards for best website, breaking news coverage, personal humor column and investigative reporting.

* Fifth-place awards for graphics and illustration, feature photography and best single editorial.

The TPA awards come on the heels of many regional and national awards the paper has received this year for excellence in journalism.

The Times Free Press received 21 awards in the 2015 Tennessee Associated Press Managing Editors journalism contest. The newspaper also was recognized as one of the best Southeast news organizations in the Society of Professional Journalists' Green Eyeshade awards, a competition among news organizations across 11 Southeastern states. The Times Free Press won five first-place awards in that competition, bested only by the Tampa Bay Times, which won six.
