Hamilton County students make gains in five of 10 testing areas

Hamilton County students improved their TCAP test scores this year in only five of the 10 testing areas, according to results released today by the Tennessee Department of Education.

High school students made a 4.6 percentage point gain in algebra II and a 5.7 percentage increase in chemistry, but fell 2.4 points below last year in algebra I and 3.8 points in biology. Even though students made gains in chemistry, 68.8 percent are at basic or below basic.

English scores for high school students show mixed results. English I scores fell by 1.5 points, but English II and III made gains of 1.7 and 0.9 points, respectively.

Students in grades 3 through 8 raised their math scores by 2.3 points, stayed relatively flat in science and lost 2.1 points in reading and language compared to last year.

Statewide, school districts made overwhelming gains in math and science, according to a news release from the Tennessee Department of Education. Results in reading and language in grades 3 through 8 declined across districts, while gains were reported in high school courses of English I and III.
